CLARITY AND PEACE

It is not good enough in a karate-do school to be a good fighter. Enlightenment means growing up - we practice to know ourselves better, to bring clarity and peace to every aspect of our lives, and to take full responsibility for ourselves.

Karate Instructor: Ken Read

Ken Read is a Uechi Ryu Karate Rokkyudan (6th degree black belt) and has been the head karate Instructor of the Northern River Karate School in Edmonton since 1989. He has been a student of martial arts since 1970 and has progressively studied Shito Ryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, Chito Ryu Karate, and Uechi Ryu Karate. He has been a guest instructor at several local Karate schools and has taught a number of self defense programs for public schools and community groups.

Ken was given his 6th degree black belt ranking and the tile of Renshi (senior expert teacher) by the International Uechi Ryu Karate Test Board in Boston in 2009. Also in 2009, Ken’s school was honored by the Alberta government for excellence in community programming.

In addition to his Uechi Ryu training, Ken is a dedicated practitioner of Qigong moving meditation and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Ken has given seminars in traditional martial arts and meditative practices for many groups and institutions including Concordia College and Grant MacEwan University. When not training and teaching, Ken is active as a professional musician and music instructor.

Classes begin with simple exercises that we all do together. Follow along, do your best, and have fun. After that, you will have one-on-one time with an instructor, who will introduce you to your first Karate movements. Dress comfortably and feel free to ask questions.
