Uechi Kanei
Kanei Uechi (June 26 1911 – February 24 1991)Asian tradition dictated to some degree that Kanbun pass the reins of a “family system” to his eldest son. Fortunately Uechi Kanei was one of the great martial arts geniuses of the early 20th century.
Kanei modernized the Uechi Ryu Karate Do system with the addition of five training kata as well as Junbi Undo, Hojo Undo and Yakosoku Kumites and Bunkais. Kanei’s practice was a remarkably pure expression of martial spirit and we are very fortunate to have video footage of his work in the NRKS library.
Since Kanei’s death in 1991 the Uechi ryu system has divided into numerous factions in Okinawa and worldwide. These various associations all generally maintain high standards and cooperate with each other on friendly terms.
